PIANO
This carving was another challenge at doing flat surfaces.
I must have a streak in me to make my carving life frustrating. Who would think such a simple thing as a old fashion piano would be that difficult to make!! Well ask me now and my answer will be a lot different than before I started this piece.
To start my woes, I was unable to find a piece of wood large enough to do the job. As it turned out I was at a friend's house and he said if I could make use of some Fir log firewood he had next to his house I was welcome to it.
I found a log about 14" in Diameter and 12" long and dragged it home.
After downsizing it closer to the desired size with an axe and hammer I started my carving. As I began to work with it I soon found out that the wood between the rings was much softer than the rings themselves. There went my smooth finish. When I tried to keep the face inside the front rectangular design smooth - More Trouble. When I tried to carve in the 88 keys-hard and soft spots ,had to make keys larger- only 66. Hey I had lots of fun and learned to appreciate working with flat surfaces.

PIANO PLAYER (LEW)
My original idea was to make the piano and the piano player one piece, but after trying to find a block of wood large enough it soon became apparent that I couldn't. The player
and stool are made of Bass Wood and are carved as one piece. I tried to include more detail in the carving from laces in his shoes to fingernails to threads in the stool center spindle. I discovered a way to make the threads in the stool but must keep it as a carver's secret.
