"SCRAPPER" the DRAGON
"Scrapper" got his name from the fact that he was made from scraps of material I had in my wood box. The head is a piece of Beechwood that came from a transition section of a spiral staircase handrail, the body is a piece of Poplar tree branch I picked up off the ground at a grove of trees in 1999, the tail is a Chokecherry tree branch given to me by my neighbour when he removed them from his garden and the fin is a section of Basswood I had left over from a previous carving.
This is the first carving I have done that was not carved as one single piece. I enjoyed the challenges of joining irregular shaped pieces together. I quickly learned about "Quickwood" products, used for this purpose, after seeking guidance from other carvers.
Most of my carvings have been finished using very little color but this one went "crazy". Due to the fact that all the different woods had naturally different colors, the challenge of "bringing them together" forced me into unfamiliar territory. The head was the biggest problem as it was no where near the color of the other pieces. In the end I used 1 sealer, 4 oil stains, 2 acrylic paints and my wife's nail polish to complete the carving.
